Boulder beat

August 14th, 2008 by Kim

boulder2.jpgI was in Niu Valley this morning, where a 3 1/2-foot boulder tumbled down a Niu Valley hillside just after 7 a.m., scraped the side of a home, smashed through the wood fence and concrete wall, and landed in the sidewalk. No one -- very fortunately -- was injured.

It was particularly interesting to read the comments on a breaking news post, which originally said the boulder was "car-size," then put it at 4.5-feet by 5-feet.

Although the posts were written before I was put on the story, I'm guessing those measurements came from preliminary reports or chatter over the police scanner.

If you have ever doubted that there is a public fascination about the "boulder beat," read the comments on the story, now up to 18 comments.

Whoa. I live in the upper right part of Palolo Valley, across from the Chinese retirement home, fortunately for me I still have a row of houses above me, towards the valley wall, that would bear the brunt of a bouler falling. Plus, I can practically punch a hole through my house with my fist so it'd maul the house. Maybe it'd land in my jacuzzi:)

  2. M:

Scott, I live just a few 100yds. away from the chinese retirement home. You must live up Waimao rd.

  3. zaiteku:

I was looking at houses in those areas (before the market started softening), because some houses had really good prices on them, and noticed many of the SFH's in the areas around Aina Haina to Hawaii Kai have boulder issues. Price wise one of the houses I was looking at was a steal, however, you would be rollin the dice as to when a giant rock would roll through your living room, or worse...probably why it took so long to move in a hot market.

  4. Scott:

Hey M-yeah, Waiomao Rd. Mine's the one with the red Nissan Xterra in the carport, just painted the house yellow, stop by if you see me out watering or tending to the many weeds!

  5. M:

Scott, I will stop by if I see you.

    My favorite comment:

"Isn't this story about the boulder almost hitting the house? Who cares how tall the cop is!"

    Cuute!

  7. frankie:

That's scary stuff. I grew up ON Haleola street. My friend also grew up in Niu Valley and a boulder went through his house, missing his sister by 5 feet.

On another note, I read the comments sometimes on the HA articles and have come to the conclusion that many, if not most, of them are complete idiots.

I thought it was going to be a blog on you going to school at the Univ. of Colorado.

Again I have read a few contrary opinions to this, and overall this does seem to be the consensus .
