Day 1: Navigating the new site
March 28th, 2008 by KimPoints/e-props to the person who can tell me the easiest way to get to the Advertiser blogs from the new home page.
I posted this last week, but if you didn’t click the link, I encourage you to watch this video, called Epic 2015, about the future of the news industry and the rise of Google.
Then tell me: what do you think of this concept of getting more and more people to blog on the Advertiser web site?
Is it a plus to have so many different points of view and not just have to resort to reading what we stressed-out reporters have to say?
Or is it like that commercial for that job search site that offers only 100K+ jobs — “when you let everyone play, nobody wins”?

The easiest way? Save the URL in the favorites section of your web browser! I think having blogs from HA employees is fine, but I am actually against having personal blogs from “civilians” on the website. It can blur the line between who is sanctioned and who is not. And another thing, is HA legally/ethically responsible for the content the community bloggers post? What happens if someone starts posting threats or slander? I signed up for an HA login and blog just so no one could steal my name. There are many other sites where people can blog (xanga, livejournal, wordpress, etc.).

I have to agree with the previous poster.
The new mainpage has too much content. Interactive is nice but the new layout is too much. Notice a theme here?
I come to the advertiser site for news and information. Public opinion? Not so much.
In the very least a - a prominent link to the HA blogs (only) and bigger fonts here.

How many personal blogs is the Advertiser willing to allow? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands?

I found the link through “Opinions” and “Featured Blogs” but I need a caclulator for all this math.

I thought the Honolulu Advertiser’s new web look was done by an in-house team. It’s actually a Gannett template.
Look at the similarities between the online version of the Gannett-owned Detroit Free Press and the Honolulu Advertiser.

Apparently Gannett wants to turn all the online versions of the papers under its corporate ownerships into Facebook clones.

I agree. Too much content and personal pages. When I go to a news source (cnn, nytimes, honoluluadvertiser, etc.) I am looking for legit sources of information and news. I’m not looking for personal opinion– I’m looking for facts. If I want personal opinion, I’d go to a blog-specific website.

I agree with previous posters. The “frontpage” has way too much content and the personal blogs occupy a space better suited for these featured blogs.

I think giving every user a blog is a wonderful idea, but the problem lies in how that information is now disseminated. Featuring it on a new site versus wordpress.com sounds like a bad dea - the signal-to-noise ratio will probably become unbearable for most; how does a normal user get to the real content expected on a news site vs. random user posting about how great a movie 21 is…

e-props?
I love ya, Kim, but sometimes you make me sad.

Andrew, c’mon. You cannot deny your history with Xanga.
The font size was changed over the weekend. Can everyone see now without using a magnifying glass?

The font on my PC was large before and now it’s small.
