Burning the midnight oil
February 29th, 2008 by KimI’m working overnight shifts tonight and Saturday, which basically means I monitor things in the Advertiser newsroom from midnight to 7:30 a.m. when the other staff start coming in. Since we became 24/7, someone’s got to be here overnight to make sure news is covered when it breaks and to update and add to our breaking news posts.
It’s slightly strange being in the newsroom all night since it’s just me and the chatter coming over the police scanners keeping me company right now. And I’m wondering why on earth I’m watching Carson Daly’s TV show…
You should see the stuff that starts appearing on TV around 3:30 a.m.

I’ve never had to work the late shift but my wife who is a pharmacist has had to man the graveyard shift many times. It’s a bit creepy from what I hear.

Not spooky? I usually first one in at our very old building and no problems but one of our workers who work late alone at night was commented to me on his “ghost” experience. He claims that while banging on the wall to hang a picture a “ghost” jabbed him back in the ribs. He made peace with the ghost by apologizing for the banging and greets him at the beginning and ending of his day…calls him “guy” like, “okay guy, see you him the morning.” He says others in the building claim to have similar ghost experiences on our floor. I have worked at other buildings with similar ghost experiences from others but not me, and I work by myself many times.

As one of the bats that hang out in the newsroom during the wee hours, I can attest it’s not always empty during that time.
The on-line guys are usually there till about 4 a.m. The custodians (Alan, Leila, Liz) walk through to do their run. And there’s some guys in sports who will stay late to catch up on work, e-mails, do video editing.
I find that I can often get more done when there’s nobody around — there’s way less distractions, the phone doesn’t ring, it’s easier to focus.
It can be hard to block out all the newsroom chatter/distractions during the day.

You’re doing great! Makes me want to stay on the Mainland a weebit longer, but I just wish it would quit raining while I’m here in Seattle.
Enjoy the night, cut the coffee fix off at about 2:30 a.m. and you should be fine. If you can figure out when to sleep the next day, lemme know.
